June Magazine Article – Deacon’s ordination

Saturday, May 19th, 2012

[Deacons] are to proclaim the gospel in word and deed… They are to
serve the community in which they are set.. They are to work with their
fellow members in searching out the poor and weak, the sick and lonely
and those who are oppressed and powerless, reaching into the forgotten
corners of the world, that the love of God may be made visible.

From the Ordination of Deacons

On 1st July Margaret, who has been with us for many years, is ordained
a deacon. To be followed, hopefully, by ordination as a priest in a
year’s time. The name deacon comes from the Greek word for servant
and it reflects that she is being called to serve or minister to others –
especially “the poor and weak, the sick and lonely.” It is great challenge
but because we have supported Margaret and been alongside her in
the training and preparation it is East Winchester’s challenge as well.
Together we are called to remember and reach “the forgotten corners of
the world.”

The privilege of having a home grown minister is that we are all part of
her selection and preparation. Through the process we recall that the
church is not primarily there for those who come to church; it is there for
the world beyond our church walls. Especially, it is there for those have
slipped through other networks be it family or friends, work or school,
health or well-being. The church is a place where we can remember
and give thanks for our blessings but also remember and reach out to
others in differing situations. In this way being a deacon or supporting a
deacon’s ministry is similar to the prayer of St Teresa of Avila:

Christ has no body now on earth but yours,
no hands but yours,
no feet but yours,
Yours are the eyes through which is to look out
Christ’s compassion to the world;
Yours are the feet with which he is to go about doing good;
Yours are the hands with which he is to bless people now.

Please keep Margaret and East Winchester Benefice in your prayers and thoughts at this time – and especially on 1st July.

With love,
